This scholarly article discusses speculations surrounding the characters in Carroll's books and how they link in with his own personal life, in particular his stuttering which he saw was impeding his way of life.
It is suggested that "Carroll's personal experiences with stuttering and the elements of the nature of stuttering contributed to the elements of his writing". Carroll suffered not only from stuttering but also from hearing loss in his right ear. This is believed to have contributed to his use of nonsense, oral aggression and his treatment of communication failure between characters. "It is widely believed after all that writers base at least some of what they write on their own unconscious and conscious experiences".
